The Great Aunts throw a party for the younger generation in 2015

The Hicksie Chicks decided a good tradition would be to throw a tea party for the younger generation.  We had such a blast!  Our  Aunt Alean attended as the oldest Hicksie Chick and the older generation wore vintage hats and we painted kids fingernails and put makeup on them and they dressed up in their cutest outfits and we had lots of jewelry and glittery things.... it was a special time that I think they will remember always.  Come along with me and enjoy our little party!

The kids Great Great  Aunt Alean has since passed away but she was in her nineties in this picture and loved attending the party!   And she sat quietly while the kids put lipstick on her and painted her nails too!

'
We had plenty of sparkle and makeup and jewelry and all the things you need for a successful party!

and it was the perfect time to dress in the finery fitting a special occasion
and the little girls loved having the makeup put on by the  Great-Aunts.

They may call us their "crazy great- aunts" someday but today there were pretty impressed with us!

There were painted nails and stick on nails and glittery nails and nails of every color... Nails of beauty!

And the lipstick flowed ....

and not just on the young!  And we didn't limit this party to just girls either!

Nails are done,  lipstick is on,  time for the eyes!

And now that everyone is looking gorgeous ....

it's time to go outside and blow some bubbles...

I think we can safely say a good time was had by all.   The kid's Great Great Aunt Alean has passed on.  Kids are growing up.  And it's important we do this again!  I hope the kids remember always getting together with their Great Aunts and Great Great Alean for a time to remember always!

Old Fashioned Flour Feed Sacks

When I was a little girl about 1960 or so my school had a school program where we all were suppose to wear white skirts, shirts and socks.  I don't remember too much about the program but I remember that little white skirt.  It was made by my Grandma Reaves and I loved it!  I thought she could do anything because she had a treadle sewing machine and could sew!  It was like magic!  You took something like an old feed sack that contained animal feed and when it was empty it became a new dress or skirt or whatever your imagination could make it.  I lived in a small town in rural America and I'm guessing I wasn't the only one wearing a skirt made from an old feed sack that day in that program.

Now as an adult I dig through bins and shelves at flea markets trying to find those coveted feed sacks.  My Grandma Hicks embroidered days of the week on tea towels and gave me a set for a wedding present. My Aunt Alean gave me a set of those tea towels before she died that my Grandma Hicks had made.  Aunt Alean was still using them!  They are a real treasure to me now! To be passed on to my daughter and grand-daughter someday.

My skirt was plain white because it was probably made from flour feed sacks  but those old feed sacks came in printed material also.   Times were hard back in those days and nothing was thrown away.  Today feed sacks come in a plastic material and meant to be thrown away.  What kind of treasures will this generation save back to pass on to their kids?  Certainly won't be feed sacks that's for sure!  So hit those flea markets and find those items made from feed sacks and save them for the next generation!  That's my plan!

Aunt Alean and her favorite Reuben sandwiches

My Aunt Alean was such a special lady and my life has been enriched just by knowing her.  She is no longer with us and I miss her terribly.  I have so many good memories of time spent with her.  She loved her country music shows  and detective shows and I loved to pack my suitcase and go spend the weekend with her.  We would grab something to eat and head to her house to kick back and fix ourselves a coke float and watch her favorite shows.  Memories that I now have to treasure. After her husband died she moved back to her home town and we became close.  I liked to tell her she was an original Hicksie Chick and she would always be a Hicksie Chick cause she like us was born with the last name Hicks.   My only regret is that I didn't know her longer.

My sister took her out to eat one day where they ordered Reubens and she loved it!  Doesn't this bring a smile to your face?  Take time out of your busy lives to spend time with the older generation.  Aunt Alean was blessed with many who loved her and I am so thankful she got to spend time in her last days with the Hicksie Chick side of her family as well as the Mast side.  She was one special lady and I miss her daily!

The day the snake terrified the sister....

Hicksie Chick # 4 and Hicksie Chick # 6 (that's what we'll call my sisters) were outside working in the yard when a small snake --possibly a baby copperhead slithered out. Hicksie Chick # 6 was standing with a hoe in her hand but the snake disappeared before she could do anything. Now Hicksie Chick # 4 had surgery on her foot or ankle and has a cast on it with open toes. She is almost positive the snake has went up her cast. She thinks she feels it move. Now the dilemma. How do you get that snake out if it really is in there?
Now the cast is to come off Wed. anyway, so I say either go to the ER and have them cut it off or let Hicksie Chick # 6 do it cause she works for a DR. and knows how. Hicksie Chick # 6 was going to bed and Hicksie Chick #4 was lying very quietly on the bed hoping and probably praying the snake is either dead, not in there at all or gonna crawl out somewhere when it gets quiet. And that brings us to another scary thought.

Hoping it is all her imagination and nothing is in that cast. Praying it does not bite her if it is in there. And also praying she uses some common sense and maybe goes to the ER to get it checked out cause baby copperheads are just as venomous as adult ones I hear.

Just so you know,  Hicksie Chicks are a little on the crazy side.
